The Kendall Family, Serving the Lord in

Kotzebue, Alaska

Newsflash: It gets cold in Alaska!

Three days ago I looked out the front window and saw something I hadn’t seen for well over a month here in Kotzebue– the glow of direct sunlight on the snowy ground illuminating the frozen scenery.

It has been over a month since I have seen the sun at all. There is a lot of darkness here. Much different from the Southern California winters I have grown accustomed to. Despite the small increase in light the temperatures have plummeted at times to –38 degrees. We have also had some days that were warmer than December, at 20 degrees.

Darkness comes in many ways in Kotzebue. Not just the absence of the Sun, but from an absence of the Son, our Savior Jesus Christ.

The effects of alcoholism and drugs can be seen throughout the community here.

For over a month we have had flyers up at the post office advertising a drug and alcohol recovery ministry for those feeling trapped and desiring freedom. So Far we haven’t had any takers.

Kelly and I have stood out in front of the Post office and given away Bibles and tracts, inviting people to come to home fellowship. We have given away lots of Bibles and tracts, but still only one person attends the study.

We know it is all in God’s hands and it will happen according to His timing. We trust that as He called us here He will accomplish through us the things He had planned even before we knew we were coming.

We would just ask that you would keep us in your prayers, pray for the people of Kotzebue, that God would open to us a door of opportunity to minister to them and to bring them the truth and the love of Jesus.

These things says He who is holy, He who is true, He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts , and shuts and no one opens: “I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name.”

Revelation 3:7-8

Children’s Ministry

We are continuing to minister to the neighborhood kids on Sunday afternoons. Two Sundays ago we saw 16 kids come to the house! We taught them through John 14:1-6, did some Scripture memory games, and went through an illustration to help them understand how it is that a relationship with Jesus is necessary in being saved and getting to heaven.

The kids are beginning to learn the songs we are singing with them and make requests for certain ones.

Please pray for these kids that the Word that is being planted in their hearts will fall onto good soil, that they might hear, and understand, and bear fruit for Jesus in their lives. Matthew 13:23

The Radio Station

We are excited to be getting sporadic visits by the UPS delivery guy. Every now and then we will get a knock on the door to find that it is not one of the neighborhood kids, but it is some more of the necessary radio parts being delivered. The Transmitter has arrived, as well as the cable to go to the antenna. The antenna has not yet made an appearance. As soon as all the parts are here, we will get a long awaited visit from Horizon Broadcast Network’s Engineer to put all the pieces together. I Imagine it will probably take about a week. We will be operating at 103.9 FM and our call letters will be KHZK. Any cool ideas for what KHZK might stand for? E-mail us. If you want to sample the radio station’s music and teachings, you can listen online to the main feeder station in St. Joseph Missouri, at www.ksrdradio.com. Our station will get it’s signal via satellite from KSRD and rebroadcast here in Kotzebue.

Moving Next Door

When we moved up we bought a duplex, in hopes that the other side of it could be used for the radio station and ministry. As of yet the other side has remained vacant. Right now we would like to equip the other side with some folding tables and chairs to be able to do Sunday school over there as the living room is getting pretty crowded and crazy with the number of kids coming.

We would also like to purchase a flannel graph set as a visual aid in teaching the Bible lessons. Anyone wishing to help equip the duplex for ministry may do so by sending a check for any amount to:

Caribou and Frostbite

I went out several weeks ago with some guys to look for some Caribou on our snowmachines. We did see some. They eluded us however. The one thing most of us did manage to catch, though was frostbite. Out of the 7 of us, 5 managed to get “bit”. I had it the least, with some others getting serious blistering the next day. I just got the tip of my nose. It was pretty minor– a little worse than a sunburn. The skin peeled off a few days later. It was –20 that day, And when you are driving your snowmachine at 40mph that gives you a wind chill of about –57 degrees. Frostbite occurs in 5 minutes or less on exposed skin at that temperature. Every piece of skin must be covered. Face, Eyeballs, you name it. Well, next time I will be a little better prepared. Some things you just never have to deal with in California. If anyone wants to come and experience it for themselves, come on up. It stays cold through March. The ocean will start to break up sometime around May. We might even get to see some temperatures in the 40’s by then. Compared to –38 that’ll seem pretty balmy. It’s all about perspective.

Blessings from,

The Kendall Family
