Kotzebue in Fall 2009

Thank You!!!

I don’t know how to thank you all enough for all the prayer support you provide for us. We are encouraged knowing you care about us and the work God is doing in Kotzebue. Your prayers for us are greatly appreciated and we do not want to take them for granted. We are very blessed to be a part of the body of Christ and share in the benefits of answered prayer. September proved to be an emotionally hard month for us as we said goodbye to two very precious children who touched our hearts in a deep way. Their mom has voiced her desire for us to continue to be able to be a part of their lives and enjoy visits occasionally. This hasn’t happened yet because of circumstances, but we are praying for the door to continue to stay open. We believe your prayers carried us through this hard time because we could feel the grace of God in a powerful way. Several days before the children left, OCS called in hopes to place another sibling group with us right away (like that day). We told them we needed a break and we would get back to them. The first morning without the kids felt very empty and strange. The second morning I decided to take a walk along the shore. God blessed me with His comfort and an amazing sun-rise. A few nights later Keith surprised me with a present he had been planning for our 18th wedding anniversary. He was able to use a free companion ticket and our Alaska PFD checks to take us on a trip to Hawaii. This couldn’t have come at a better time! What a blessing to actually go and be alone with each other for 6 days. We had time to pray together about many things concerning ministry here and things that had been heavy on our hearts. Hawaii is a beautiful place, but just being alone with my husband for a week and having time to be refreshed in the Lord was truly a gift that was greatly needed. We came home strengthened and ready for another season of whatever the Lord has for us. I made a call to Children’s Services last week and told them that we are ready for another child (or 2 children) We are waiting for a call when there is a need. We don’t know any details yet and are just praying for God’s will.

Ministry in/outside the home

God is doing awesome things with the women’s study growing beyond capacity to two nights. I (Keith) have begun a men’s study as well with about 9 guys going through 2 Timothy and it has just been a real blessing. The guys seem to be really enjoying it and there has been a lot of good discussion which has been convicting and challenging. I would ask for your prayers as I am looking at the chaplains program here for the State Troopers. It would not only give me the opportunity to get out to some of the villages and minister to folks in a time of need, who may not have a pastor or someone else they can pray with, but also a greater opportunity to minister to the Troopers here in Kotzebue.

The Two Shall Become One

A year and a half ago, while I was subbing at the school, the Lord put it on my heart to have a baby shower for a young woman who also worked at the school. I hardly knew her, but felt led, because of some circumstances, to reach out. When I asked her about it, she was excited and very appreciative. It felt a little awkward, but God was tugging at my heart. Several months later she and her boyfriend came to our house seeking counseling. Both repented and received Christ. Keith met with them once a week for counseling. We have been so blessed to see them grow in their walk with the Lord and the knowledge of His love for them. Keith had the honor of being able to officiate at their wedding several weeks ago. This was definitely the highlight of the last few months. What an encouragement to see God move in such a powerful way in the lives of those who turn to Him for help. Allen and Brenda asked Keith to share the gospel message during the ceremony because family members were attending from some of the nearby villages. God answered many prayers that day and He was totally glorified. Brenda requested the song “Amazing Love” to be sung and played as her father walked her down the isle. It was very hard for me to sing without crying tears of joy because of what God has done in their lives. The song wraps up with the words “In all I do, I honor you.” Allen and Brenda truly did honor God in a powerful way that day by choosing to get married. I love how marriage is a picture of the relationship we have with God. I love how Jesus refers to the church as His bride and how He loves us so much that He laid down his life for us.

Goodbye Fall

Fall is so short here. I think winter set in about a month ago. The temperature reached 0 degrees 3 days ago for the first time this season. There is no turning back now! We have already experienced one blizzard and Keith had to fix a busted pipe under the house yesterday in 7 degrees. He had to change clothes several times because they were soaked and cold. After that trial, he was totally blessed to bring home his first moose from a hunt today!!! We have enough meat for the winter!!!
